At 02:59am, Station 21 was dispatched to the 200 block of Henley Road for a dwelling with a report of smoke in the residence. Once enroute, County advised Engine 21 that the Lower Merion Police were on location reporting a working fire. Full company Station 26 (Narberth) was requested. Engine 21 and 21-54 arrived on-scene and reported a "2 story, single family" dwelling with "heavy smoke showing". Reports from the Police and homeowner advised of a fire in the basement, and two cats still inside. 21-5 (Chief J. Fallon) established command. Crews stretched an 1 3/4" handline to the back door and encountered heavy smoke conditions. The hose team located the basement stairs, and were faced with extreme heat coming from the basement. Meanwhile, Ladder 21 began a search, and located the staircase to the 2nd floor, which was next to the living room. Search crews reported to command they had heavy fire also in the living room. At the same time, outside ventilation was conducted, and fire began pouring from the windows. With deteriorating conditions, command ordered all members to evacuate the dwelling and County evacuation tones were transmitted. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, crews re-entered the structure for extinguishment and extensive overhaul. The fire was placed under control at 03:52am. Additional units assisting were Engine 23 (Bryn Mawr) as the FAST team, Air 24 (Gladwyne), and Medic 313 (Narberth Ambulance). The Lower Merion Township Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
