All across America, firefighters respond to thousands of fire alarm activations each day. The vast majority of these activations turn out to be false alarms, or accidental activations. However, that was not the case today. At 18:36 hours, Station 21 was dispatched to the 1300 block of Remington Road for a fire alarm. 21-5 (Chief Fallon) arrived on scene first and reported nothing showing, followed soon later by Engine 21. As the crews began to check the residence from the perimeter, the homeowner returned, and unlocked the house. The crew was met by thick smoke upon entering. Chief Fallon requested a working fire dispatch, and Engine 21's crew pulled an 1.75" handline. The smoke was eminating from the basement, and crews found items in a basement storage closet on fire. A quick knock kept the fire in check, and crews confirmed negative extension. Crews were in service for a while ventilating the smoke which filled most of the house.
Entire in service time was just over one hour. Assisting on the fire were full company station 26 (Narberth), RIT Squad 23 (Bryn Mawr), Air 24 (Gladwyne) and Medic 313 (Narberth Ambulance). Also making the response was our new local township commissioner and fire commissioner, Lance Rogers.
SPECIAL DRILL AT HOUSE IN BRYN MAWR
Date:
4/27/06
Today, members got together for a special drill at a home that was purchased by Bryn Mawr Hospital as a part of their expansion project. A crew of nine got together and practiced hose advancement, search and rescue, and ventilation operations. Opportunities like this are always good, in that it gives us the ability to sharpen our skills in an acquired structure that we are not familiar with.
HAZ-MAT TRAILER DELIVERED
Date:
4/15/06
Today, we received our much talked about decon trailer. This trailer was given to us by the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety as part of a Homeland Security grant. This new piece of equipment adds to our Special Operations division, and is to protect acute care hospitals in the event of an incident.
Narberth Ambulance (Medic 313-3) was dispatched to the Unit block of River Road at the Flat Rock Dam in Gladwyne for the Industrial Accident. The call was quickly upgraded at 1054 hours to include Station 24 (Gladwyne), Rescue 22 (Belmont Hills), and Rescue 21 (Penn Wynne). First arriving LMFD units discovered that an employee who was working around the newly constructed fish ladder was knocked 18 feet into the bottom of the fish ladder area. The worker was knocked down into this area by a pickup truck that was pushed by a runaway crane. Narberth Ambulance crews along with the LMFD Rescue Service, immobilized the patient, packaged the subject into a stokes basket, and utilized the crane along with rescue tag lines to hoist the patient up out of the below grade environment. The patient was then transported to the Shipley School Athletic Field where Engine 24-1 had secured a Landing Zone for PennSTAR 1 who continued the transport to The Hospital of
University of Pennsylvania, Trauma Center. 24-5 (Chief Block) had the Command. The collaborative effort by all involved resulted in a safe and efficient rescue. Rescue 21 was ready for service at 1132 hours.
