For this weeks drill, members practiced our vehicle rescue skills on a donated vehicle. Deputy Chief Schmid also arranged for Guardian Fire Equipment to stop by so we could demo some of the latest Hurst rescue equipment. It was a great opportunity to compare our existing Maverick and Xtractor to the newer versions. Newer members also got a review of basic stabilization and glass removal. Thanks to Guardian for coming down and showing these new tools to us.
If you have an old vehicle you are looking at getting rid of, and want to help your local volunteer fire company, consider donating it to us. This is the best way our members get to train and practice their techniques, and you can also use the donation as a tax deduction. Contact the firehouse for more information.
A TRAIN CRASH AT THE MERION TRAIN STATION?
Date:
8/29/07
An unusual dispatch took place at 8:53AM today. A rescue box was dispatched for the Merion Train station for a report of a train crash. Just as units marked enroute, County communications advised that this was not train crash at all, but a mechanical problem with the train with a possible injured subject. Engine 26, Rescue 22 and Rescue 21 proceeded to the scene for confirmation. An investigation revealed that a motor on the train had fallen off, presumably causing the train to jerk, resulting in a passenger falling. With the scene quickly under control, Rescue 21 went available.

Rescue 22 quickly handled the assignment, and Rescue 21 went available at 11:03PM.

Date:

This evening Engine 21 with a crew of five relocated to the Merion Fire Company of Ardmore to cover the station while their members attended a Phillies game. The five hour cover resulted in no calls, but we enjoyed a great meal with a few of their members who had stayed back. We asked their Dalmatian, Booster, which color fire truck he preferred....the answer is below.
MONDAY BRINGS THREE CALLS FOR 21
Date:
8/20/07
The beginning of a new week brought three calls to Penn Wynne. The first call was around 9:00AM on Indian Creek Lane for the automatic alarm. Engine 21 was greeted on the front lawn by the homeowner, who reported an accidental activation due to cooking. At 11:32AM, Rescue 21 relocated to the Highland Park Fire Company in Upper Darby while they battled a three alarm lumber yard fire. The four hour cover resulted in no calls. Then just before midnight, the company was dispatched just down the street to the new Beth Hamedrosh Synagogue for the automatic alarm. It was ironic timing, because just last week members took a tour of the facility, so we were quite familiar as to the layout. This alarm was found to be faulty.
RESCUE RUNS TO BRYN MAWR
Date:
8/12/07
At around 23:00 hours, the rescue assignment was dispatched to the area of Harcum College on West Montgomery Avenue in Bryn Mawr for a vehicle rescue. A two car motor vehicle crash occurred, trapping the driver of one of the vehicles. Rescue 21 landed on the scene and assisted Squad 23’s crew, who already had the vehicle stabilized. Crews worked together to remove the drivers side door. Because of the mechanism of injury, the driver was flown to The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) after being stabilized by Narberth Ambulance. Deputy 23 (Kincade) had the command. Rescue 21 went available shortly thereafter.
THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS FOR OUR FELLOW BROTHERS

The officers and members of the Penn Wynne Fire Company send our thoughts and prayers to our fellow firefighters at the Parkside Fire Company Station 45 in Delaware County. Companies responded for a building fire, and arrived to find heavy fire conditions in a residential structure. Members entered the structure to extinguish the fire and to search for possible victims, when the second floor collapsed on top of them. It took several minutes to locate and remove the firefighters, who sustained severe burns. Two of their members remain in critical condition.

VEHICLE FIRE TRAINING
Date:
8/7/07
Even a hot summer night could not stop Penn Wynne firefighters from honing their skills. For this weeks drill, Senior Firefighter / PA State Instructor Chris Feder set up a great vehicle fire drill. Utilizing Bucks County Fire Academy’s simulator, the first scenario dealt not only with a burning vehicle, but hazardous materials. With such props as colored smoke, large metal barrels, and DOT placards, crews had to rely on their hazmat skills and identify the type of incident, the materials involved, and safety considerations. The remaining scenarios focused on the burning vehicle itself and tactics for extinguishing them.
