NATIONAL INCIDENT SAFETY OFFICER
Date: 01/25/08 The Penn Wynne Fire Company is pleased to announce that several of its’ members have successfully obtained the National Incident Safety Officer (ISO) certification. All of the company officers, half of our paid staff, and a hand full of senior members were educated by Bucks County Community College Public Safety instructors in this 16 hour comprehensive course.

You may be asking yourself just what does a Safety Officer do? The primary propose is safety of all responders. The ISO must have the ability, skill, and the knowledge to accomplish his/her role. The ability to recognize and forecast risks involving first responders utilizing his/her experience and intuition. The skill to communicate his/her concerns of unsafe operations to firefighters, officers and/or the Incident Commander diplomatically; thereby causing an incident or an activity of the incident to be altered, suspended, or terminated. The knowledge and experience in the type of incident he or she is assigned. This may include structure fires, emergency medical operations, and/or any one of a variety of special operations.

BUSY 24 HOURS FOR THE WYNNE
Date: 1/7/08 - 1/8/08 The Penn Wynne Fire Company has seen a plethora of activity in the past 24 hours. Starting Monday January 7th, the company was dispatched to the 600 block of Ballytore Road for the automatic alarm system around 2PM. Upon arrival, crews found unattended cooking in the dwelling. The company was in service for a bit ventilating. Then at 8PM the box assignment was dispatched to the Citgo gas station at Lancaster and Wynnewood for smoke from the roof. The Narberth Fire Company assisted us in securing a malfunctioning heater motor. On Tuesday January 8th at 2:30AM we went back to the Citgo gas station for the alarm system. The company found a faulty detector. At 4:30AM we went to the 700 block of Argyle Road for an odor of gas in the dwelling. Crews investigated an odor of home heating fuel inside, with no apparently cause. Then in the afternoon, the rescue assignment was dispatched to City Avenue and Presidential Boulevard for an overturned auto with one trapped. The companies were recalled enroute, as the Philadelphia Fire Department’s rescue services took care of patient. Finally at 4:30PM, the company was dispatched as the second alarm assignment for the working building fire at the Eviva Restaurant on Montgomery Avenue in Penn Valley. Crews assisted the Narberth and Merion Fire Company in checking for extension in the large, old structure. All of this activity must be related to our unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve been experiencing.

Ironically, Senior Firefighter Chris Feder (aka Specialist Feder) has left to begin his pre-deployment training for Afghanistan. Chris departed Monday morning to Fort Bragg, North Carolina for 6 weeks of intense tactical training. Make us proud, Chris!!
