"LZ 21 CALLING PENNSTAR 1"
Date:
5/14/08
This evening’s drill was class on helicopter landing operations. PennSTAR paramedic Blaine Leis taught an excellent class, covering such topics as establishing a LZ (landing zone), types of helicopters and their specific characteristics, and most importantly what firefighters should do if there is an emergency involving the helicopter. Then the class, comprised of personnel from multiple agencies, went out the Lankenau Hospital helipad to actually land PennSTAR 1 (a BK117 model helicopter). The group then got a hands on look at helicopter operations, and were able to ask the flight crew questions. We would like to thank Medic Leis, the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, the PennSTAR flight crew, Lankenau Hospital, and all of the emergency responders that attended for making this an terrific learning experience.
BRYN MAWR RESCUE
Date:
5/12/08
With heavy rains and high winds in the township for several hours, thanks to a Nor’easter, the odds were good that a call would come in which someone was going to need our help. And for one unfortunate woman, it happened to be her. Lucky for her the Penn Wynne Fire Company was ready. Just before 11AM, a rescue assignment went out for South Merion Avenue at Old Lancaster Road for a tree on a car with a subject trapped. Rescue crews from Bryn Mawr, Penn Wynne and Belmont Hills went in service removing the tree, which had consumed the car. Once this was done, the old “try before you pry” was performed on the drivers door, and medics from Narberth Ambulance quickly began patient care. The driver happened to be sitting in such a way that it created a sort of pocket in the vehicle, and her injuries appear to be non-life threatening.
WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CHRIS FEDER
Date:
5/7/08
Somewhere in Afghanistan. Chris recently provided some photos of his tour of duty, fighting the war on terrorism. In the top left photo, somewhere in there is Chris. Can you see him? Also hiding in this photo is Public Enemy #1, Osama Bin Laden. Do you see him?
The picture to the right is the first meeting of the Chris Feder Fan Club, Afghanistan division. Chris is meeting new people daily, and telling them how he has fought many fires and saved many lives. This fan club will soon reach 6 people and will have to use a larger tent to have their meetings.
It just wouldn’t be Chris Feder without stopping at a fire station. In the lower left picture he toured the fire station at the air base during his down time. We asked Chris to pick up the specs for this vehicle to see if it will fit in our firehouse.
Finally, this lower right picture shows Chris hard at work. This is him providing roof top surveillance and security during a high level government meeting. Chris, being the expert marksman that he is, was selected to be the high angle sniper on this mission.
All joking aside, we have been in phone contact with Chris. His spirits are high and he is making the best of the situation. We have sent several care packages to him, which he greatly appreciates. Stay tuned for future updates on our “Hometown Hero”!
