The Penn Wynne Fire Company congratulations Firefighters Glenn Montgomery and Will Neely on being two of the 23 recipients of The Main Line Chamber Foundation 2008 Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Scholarship. Fourteen volunteer fire companies serving the Main Line are represented by the 23 firefighter scholarship recipients. The cumulative volunteer service provided by these young firefighters is more than 80 years! Most of them are working, going to school, and committed to serving as a volunteer firefighter with their local fire company. Over 70% of the award recipients have a family member who is also a firefighter. It is truly an honor to present these outstanding young firefighters and EMTs with $1000 scholarship award towards their college education.
The Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Scholarship program began in 2006 with $6,000. In 2007, this program awarded $14,500. The increase in 2008 awards to $23,000 is due to a fundraiser hosted by Turnaround Management Association (TMA) to honor the memory of Lower Merion firefighter Thomas J. Hays. With generous community support, the Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Scholarship program will continue to grow and provide support, recognition, and honor to the young firefighters serving our communities.
The Volunteer Firefighter/EMT Scholarship Program is part of a special project initiated by The Foundation to increase public awareness of the acute need to support, retain, and recognize volunteer firefighters and EMTs on the Main Line. (Not pictured Firefighter Neely)

Engine 25 arrived to find the homeowner had self evacuated, but not before receiving severe burns to their body. They were transported to Temple Hospital by Medic 313. STORMS SUMMON THE BRIGADE
Date:
7/23/08
With thunderstorms approaching the village, the brigade was ready for action. The first call received was for a report of an electric wheelchair on fire inside a para-transit bus around 5PM. Engine 21 arrived to find the malfunctioning wheelchair already removed from the bus. A brief inspection revealed no fire and the wheelchair was de-energized.
Around 11PM the company was dispatched to the Green Hill Condos for a fire alarm. An investigation revealed a leak in the sprinkler system in the basement. The on-duty fire marshal was summoned to make the response.
Then just minutes after midnight, the company was dispatched to the unit block of Meredith Road for a reported odor of smoke in the dwelling after a possible lightening strike. Once enroute, Engine 21 was advised that two homes next to each other were both reporting an odor inside. After a detailed investigation, it was determined that a bolt of lighting struck just next to one home, resulting in damaging and tripping one electrical breaker, dispersing the trash cans and creating a crater in the ground. The resulting surge also tripped a breaker in the neighboring house. PECO was requested to respond, and the company was available by 1AM.

Engine 21 stood by until the vehicle was up righted. The company was available around 6AM.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY
Date:
7/4/08
The Penn Wynne - Overbrook Hills Fire Company wishes everyone a safe and happy Independence Day. The fire company participated in the annual Penn Wynne Civic Association parade, which ended at the elementary school. Later that night, members attended the fireworks display in Narberth.
Sometime in the afternoon, we received an email from Firefighter Feder, with an interesting story and picture. Seems Chris and his fellow troops were having another delightful day on their Forward Operating Base (FOB) in beautiful Afghanistan, when some of the pesky locals started to cause a stir. Well, these U.S. troops weren’t going to let a handful of hooligans ruin their 4th of July, so the base commander decided to put on a “fireworks” show for these degenerates to brighten their day. It must of worked, because afterwards they were no where to be seen. God bless America!
LADDER 21 OUT OF SERVICE
Date:
7/3/08
And Utility 21 could not have come at a better time. This morning Ladder 21 just didn’t want to start. Turns out the starter went on the vehicle. But the starter is under the cab, which is under the aerial, which was under the roof of the firehouse, so in order to even look at the starter, we needed get the ladder pulled out of the firehouse. After some time, the truck was out of the firehouse. The decision was made to take the truck directly to the mechanic because the truck was also due for its’ annual aerial and pump preventative maintenance. Utility 21 was relocated to the ladder bay to run third out as a manpower carrier.
UTILITY 21 HAS ARRIVED
Date:
7/2/08
With the help of a state grant, and a bit of our own money, the Penn Wynne Fire Company has purchased a Ford F-350 Super Duty Quad Cab pick up truck, radio designation Utility 21. The primary purpose of this vehicle is to pull Decon 21, our hazardous materials decontamination trailer provided by the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety. Utility 21 will also serve as a support vehicle to transport additional personnel to incidents. There are still a few minor additions yet to come, but the truck is in service.
